Ashé Cultural Arts Center announces the return of Story Circle, a play written and directed by John Grimsley, aimed at getting people to talk about, accept and understand racial differences. It will be performed at Ashé Cultural Arts Center, 1712 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in New Orleans on July 15, 16, 22, and 23, 2011 at 7:00 p.m.; with Sunday matinee performances on July 17 and 24, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. Following each of the Sunday performances, audience members will be invited to participate in live story circles that will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the evening of those shows.
Story Circle describes the emotions and experiences that emerged from numerous meetings conducted as part of Truth Be Told, a multi-year project that kicked off in 2008, and was developed to use theater, storytelling and improvisation to open discussions about race and racism in our communities.
Part touching, part tumultuous, Story Circle skillfully documents attempts to expose, discuss and heal the New Orleans racial divide. Says Carol Bebelle, executive director of Ashé, “Truth Be Told” had its roots in a “Bring Back New Orleans” meeting, where “the tensions of race” would appear, but never be fully addressed.” Through these performances, the audience can experience those emotions from their theater seats, and then can choose to join in the discussion by sharing their own stories in a story circle.
The cast includes Troi Bechet, Dollie Eaglin-Monroe, Harold X. Evans, Adella Gautier, Ian Lawrence, Raphaelle O’Neil, Jennifer Pagán, and Philip Tracy.
General admission is $15; senior citizens and students $10.
